Teeth and eyes gleamed up at her. While not up to a Molocar's weight or strength, these hounds were killers. She had seen them practice on the weaker of their own kind: their mothers first taught them to eat meat by ripping apart the runt of each litter and feeding the bloody scraps to its stronger siblings.

A direhound is a large hunting dog kept by the Kencyr. They're sighthounds, used to run down prey.[1]
A direhound is smaller than a Molocar but larger and fiercer than a lymer. In To Ride a Rathorn, there is reference to Rawneth wearing a dress based on a direhound's pattern: They have white bodies flecked with silver, and black legs, tails and heads.[2]
