An established son of a Kencyr lord is one who has been authorized to bind Kendar in his own right.[1] They are the only people other than lords who are allowed to bind.[2] Like all who can bind Kendar, they must be Shanir.

The practices regarding established sons have varied over time. In earlier times, established sons would go set up minor houses of their own. Nowadays, lords keep their sons close, with the sons' Kender adding to the major house's total Kendar.[3] Still, the sons and their Kendar are given some measure of independence.[1]

Still, huge piles of fire wood showed that they would rather have kept these stark lodgings than give up the morsel of independence which their lord had granted them. How important it was to be established, given permission to bind Kendar in one's own right."

In the old days, these new lords would have gone off to set up their own minor houses as the Min-drear had, often near the Barrier. Now, however, all nine major houses held their people close,"
